Ernesto was Vice-President of his senior class but also held the office of President of the Boys Service Club, Latin Club, Negro History Club and Science Club. He served as the Vice-President of the Drama Club where he appeared in numerous stage productions. He was also a member of the 1962 State Championship Track Team.
Upon graduation, Mr. Borges attended Loop City College (now Harold Washington College and Northern Illinois University but shortly thereafter, entered the U.S. Army where he served a tour of duty in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star for Heroism, a second Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces, and a Purple Heart for injuries sustained amongst other medals and awards. Sergeant Borges then returned to civilian life where he enrolled at Southern Illinois University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Theater.
In the summer of graduation, Ernesto traveled to New York City to seek his fame and fortune in the world of theater. After a few minor successes, he returned home to Chicago where he became a school teacher before becoming employed at the Illinois State Board of Elections where he held numerous positions including Administrative Assistant to the Chairman. After eight years with the Election Board, Attorney Borges made a life-changing decision by enrolling into at Northern Illinois University School of Law.
Although Mr. Borges had numerous offers of employment upon graduation from law school, his entrepreneurial spirit dictated that he establish his own firm, The Law Offices of Ernesto D. Borges, Jr., P.C., and later formed BillBusters, a consumer bankruptcy firm. Before merging with Ledford and Wu, now Ledford Wu and Borges (“LWB”), he was the owner of the largest African American-owned bankruptcy firm in the United States. Although Ledford Wu and Borges (“LWB”) focuses on bankruptcy and foreclosure defense, the firm also services clients in the areas of the law including personal injury, wrongful death and other civil and criminal matters. The “merged” LWB firm has a combined total of over 50,000 filed bankruptcies thus helping people save their homes from foreclosure, save their property, and eliminate oppressive debt. Attorney Borges is respected for his competence, compassion and consideration for those who are faced with legal challenges.
In addition to his responsibilities as senior partner of LWB, Mr. Borges is the host of the “The Debt Free Show” on Inspiration 1390AM radio every Saturday morning from 10-11am. He can also be heard on the “Borges Report”, a weekly news and commentary show heard on WVON AM radio every Sunday morning at 9am. And to keep in touch with his artistic pursuits, Ernesto stays active in the theater and film communities.
Being a member of numerous charitable, civic and professional organizations, Ernesto and his wife, Stephanie, an obstetrician/gynecologist, reside in Hyde Park and continue their service to those in need. He is one of Chicago’s leading attorneys and a servant to our communities.
